About C 3-studios
At the end of March 2025, C 3-studios opened its doors, opening a new, 7,000m², studio complex in a former Technical School in Oud-Charlois Rotterdam.
C 3-studios offers affordable spaces to approximately 122 artists and other creatives from over 33 different countries.
C 3-studios is an artist-driven workspace that was established through a unique collaboration between SKAR (Stichting Kunst Accommodatie Rotterdam) and NAC (Nieuwe Ateliers Charlois foundation). NAC's self-organisation in transforming the building to a studio complex and NAC's self-management agreement was converted into a cost and rent reduction.
The agreement also freed up shared presentation and project spaces such as the gym, bicycle parking, and cafeteria.
C 3-studios strives for internal collective spirit and a strong connection with its surroundings.

Who Runs C 3-studios?

SKAR
SKAR (Stichting Kunst Accommodatie Rotterdam) supports the creative sector in Rotterdam by offering affordable workspace, creating meeting places, and fostering connections. It manages over 45 buildings. SKAR believes that the creative sector contributes significantly to Rotterdam's cultural, economic, and spatial planning environment.
SKAR leases the entire building from the Municipality of Rotterdam and manages the contracts and general finances.
For SKAR C 3-studios is a pilot project to investigate the possibility of self-management by the artists, offering them freedom through responsibility, and thus able to reduce the square meter price.

NAC
NAC (Stichting Nieuwe Ateliers Charlois) (2004) is a voluntary, independent, self-management organization in Charlois, founded by artists, and provides an artistic/cultural environment/living and working spaces for artists in and around their communities. It strives to achieve this in an appropriate way, both socially, economically, and artistically. It seeks collaboration, the added value of the collective, as a community, as a strength, within the context of a larger community. It seeks an economic model in which profit is not made from others, an equal way of interacting. It aims to develop art in society, offer a cultural platform to everyone who wants to express themselves, and facilitate this. It is 100% committed to this, seeking opportunities, possibilities, responsibility, form, implementation, fairness, diversity, freedom, openness, aftercare, and reality!
Since 2004, NAC has managed the vacant properties of various housing associations in Charlois. In 2010, it managed more than 100 homes with 200 artists from the Netherlands and abroad. Since then, several clusters, such as Wolphaertstraat, now the W1555 association, have been completely renovated and independently converted into sustainable social housing (2022 architecture award). The NAC Foundation consists of Tineke Teunen and Kamiel Verschuren.
